The first camera I ever loved was my father’s Contax — a brass-worn 139 Quartz he carried through the karri forests of the state’s south-west, where I grew up beneath trees whose bark burns red after rain. He photographed the forest the way other people pray: quietly, repeatedly, without needing to explain himself. I learned to see before I learned to compose. I learned that light through tall trees is not a backdrop but a subject, and that patience is the only lens that matters.
I bought my first roll of Portra with money from a weekend job and ruined most of it. The frames that survived taught me the second lesson: film forgives nothing and rewards everything. You cannot spray and pray your way to an honest photograph. You wait, you watch, you press the shutter once — and the photograph either holds the moment or it doesn’t. Ten years and three hundred weddings later, that discipline still governs everything we make at Red Bark Studio.
My philosophy is simple to say and difficult to keep: presence over perfection. A wedding is not a styled shoot that has lost its way. It is the most concentrated day of love most families will ever share, and it deserves to be witnessed rather than managed. So we don’t carry fog machines or bark orders through clenched teeth. We learn names. We find the quiet corners. We photograph the grandmother watching from the third row and the groom’s hands before the vows, because in thirty years those are the frames that will break your heart open in the best way.
